Why “Accidental” Isn’t the Same as “Wrong”

I never sat down one day and decided to build a life around cleaning houses.

It happened to me — or maybe for me. In 2009, I started cleaning my aunt’s home almost by accident. Her longtime cleaner had moved on, I was already there, and I just… started. My mom helped for a little while. Then I branched off on my own, picking up a few clients through word of mouth. One thing led to another, the way life does, and years passed. I wore a lot of hats in that stretch. None of them fit quite right except this one.

Looking back, the pieces just fell into place. I was supposed to be doing something else entirely, keeping this on the side. But I believe I was being guided, even when I couldn’t see where to. The right people showed up. The right opportunities came at strange angles that didn’t make sense in the moment. It wasn’t an accident — it was guided, and then I got intentional about it, and it grew. Slowly. Organically. Honestly.

I think that’s the part I want you to sit with more than the cleaning part: most of us are waiting for a plan before we’ll call something real, I know I did and sometimes still find myself doing so with different things. But some of the truest paths don’t arrive as plans. They arrive as the next small thing in front of you, and you either say yes or you don’t.

Here’s what that “accidental” path actually taught me:

Peace doesn’t always look like what you expected. I never feel like I’m working — not because the work is easy, but because it gives me structure and focus in a body and brain that crave both. That’s worth noticing in your own life: where do you lose track of time in a good way? That’s data, not coincidence.

Showing up consistently is its own kind of purpose. Life is always going to be a little messy — that’s not a problem to solve, it’s just what being human looks like. The meaning isn’t in eliminating the mess. It’s in deciding to keep showing up inside of it, for yourself and for the people counting on you.

You don’t need a fancy title to have a calling. I don’t need a corner office or a nice name plate on my door for what I do to matter. If I’m putting my name on something, I want it done well — and that standard doesn’t require anyone else’s permission or path. And it’s something I do everyday, just ask my clients!

If you’re reading this feeling behind, or stuck doing something just to survive — I see you. I was there too, and honestly, I’m still figuring out plenty of it as I go.

But here’s what I know now: you’re allowed to build a life on your own terms. One that feels good, not just one that looks good from the outside. It might be quiet. It might be simple. It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s to be full of purpose.

Life really is what you make it. So why not make it something you love?
